About Naturopaths
Also known as NDs or naturopathic doctors, naturopaths are healthcare providers who use natural therapies to support and stimulate healing. They offer a wide range of services to people of all ages, including acupuncture, drawing blood, and dispensing and prescribing drugs. Find a comprehensive list of the Controlled Acts Naturopaths can perform.
All licensed naturopaths complete a minimum of three years of university-level training, including pre-medical courses, and four years at an accredited naturopathic medical program.
Naturopaths practising in Ontario are regulated by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. Registration with a regulatory body ensures they have the knowledge, skills and judgment necessary to care for their patients safely and effectively.
“ND”, “naturopathic doctor” and “naturopath” are protected titles. That means only people who are qualified to practise can use the title. Anyone seeing a naturopath should expect a highly trained professional who has met comprehensive standards. They are held accountable by the College for their conduct and practice.
It is important that you know exactly who is delivering your care. Anyone using a protected title without belonging to the relevant regulatory college is an illegal practitioner engaged in unauthorised practice. The appropriate college will investigate. You can find information about all naturopaths registered to practise in Ontario in our Public Register.
Contact the College if you have any concerns about an Ontario naturopath’s conduct or practice. College staff can help you understand the standards of the profession and advise you on your rights as a patient.
The College will always put the interests of the public first.
