Health Information Privacy and Reporting

The latest edition of our landmark Regulatory Education Program (REP) will feature a special guest speaker, Andrew Drummond, Director of Health Policy from the office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC).  Mr. Drummond will be providing an overview of the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA), and the obligations related to consent and privacy breach reporting.

Participants will leave this session with a renewed understanding of the role of the IPC, the purpose, application and key concepts within the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA), how to recognize when a privacy breach has occurred, reporting privacy breaches and best practices for responding to privacy breaches.

This educational session is intended to help NDs understand the process for collecting and protecting personal health information, reporting requirements, and how best to interpret and navigate this nuanced topic.

Be sure to register and secure your spot in advance. Participants will have an opportunity to directly pose questions to the office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario during this session.

Presenters

Andrew Drummond, Director of Health Policy
Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario

Andrew Drummond is the Director of Health Policy at the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, a position he has held since 2022. His office is involved in offering commentary to government and other public bodies, preparing guidance for the health sector on requirements and best practices for the health sector, and indirectly regulating several organizations in Ontario’s health sector that hold special capacities for the collection and use of personal health information under PHIPA, Ontario’s health information protection law, as well as other functions. Prior to joining the IPC, Andrew held numerous positions in Ontario’s Ministry of Health, the University of Toronto, and the University of Alberta.

Andrew Parr, CEO

Andrew Parr is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the College of Naturopaths of Ontario, the regulatory authority governing naturopathic doctors in Ontario. He was first appointed to the College during its formative stages in August 2010 and, upon proclamation of the Naturopathy Act, 2007 in July 2015 was formally re-appointed by the new Council.

Prior to joining the College, Andrew had been working in the not-for-profit sector for 20 years including eight of which he served as the Executive Director and CEO of the association for registered massage therapists in Ontario. Andrew has also served as the Executive Director of the Canadian Society of Association Executives-Trillium Chapter for ten years through a successful association management firm he had established.

Andrew has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in politics from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario and has attained his Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the Canadian Society of Association Executives.

Outside of work, Andrew enjoys spending time at the lake with his husband of 30 years and his delightful pups, Chandler and Gunther.

About the Regulatory Education Program

The Regulatory Education Program provides Registrants as well as members of the public access to free virtual educational programming that is focused directly on key regulatory concepts and rules. It is intended to allow Registrants and the public to learn more about the regulatory framework which governs NDs in Ontario and to help NDs not only comply, but to avoid potential issues that present a risk of harm to the public.
