Substitute Decision Making
This Regulatory Education Program (REP) session focused on substitute decision making in naturopathic care in Ontario. We looked at the legal and ethical frameworks including the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA), the Health Care Consent Act, 1996 (HCCA), and the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA).
This session will help you understand the roles of naturopathic doctors and substitute decision makers, while offering applicable practical insights on ensuring informed consent and navigating through complex situations in compliance with relevant legislation and ethical standards. It is a fantastic opportunity to deepen your knowledge and enhance your approach to patient care.

Dr. Kathy Van Zeyl, ND
Dr. Kathy Van Zeyl, ND is a graduate of Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and has been practicing the profession since 2009. She has a private practice in Ottawa where she has a special focus on Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. In addition to her work on the Regulatory Education Program, Kathy is also a member of the College’s Standards Committee.
Dr. Mary‐Ellen McKenna, ND (Ret.) Manager, Quality Assurance and Inspection
Dr. Mary‐Ellen McKenna, ND (Retired) serves as the College’s Manager, Quality Assurance and Inspection. She provides guidance to registrants, stakeholders and the public on the regulations and standards of the profession and oversees the Quality Assurance and Inspection Program areas. Prior to working with the College, Mary‐Ellen served on the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy and the Transitional Council of the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.
