Updates to the Ontario IVIT Exam
Posted On: September 28, 2023
On July 26, 2023, the Council of the College approved minor changes to the IVIT examination blueprint [available within the Ontario IVIT Exam Handbook (revised September 2023)] to provide increased flexibility to how and where the exam is administered while still maintaining the rigour of assessment to ensure those deemed to meet the Standard of Practice for IVIT have the knowledge, skill and judgment to do so safely and competently.
Overview of Changes to the Exam
Sequence of Practical Components: The compounding and vascular access practical components of the exam will be administered together (without scheduled break periods in between components), to better reflect their sequence in practice. Time granted to a candidate for completion of the sterile compounding component (20 minutes) and vascular access component (30 minutes) will not be affected by this change and candidates will continue to only have saline solution administered.
Use of Mock (Horizontal) Laminar Airflow Hoods: To allow the exam to be administered at different venues, which may have only one laminar airflow hood and/or insufficient compounding space to accommodate a practical examination, Candidates will be required to demonstrate aseptic technique in a simulated sterile compounding room, set-up within the vascular access room, with a mock laminar airflow hood. Additional information is available in the Ontario IVIT Exam Handbook.
Exam Venue: The College is presently in the process of finalizing arrangements for running the examination at a new exam venue within the GTA. Candidates registering for the December 3, 2023, examination will be apprised directly of exam location once registration for the examination closes.
