Standard of Practice for Intravenous Infusion Therapy

The General Regulation and associated standards outline the requirements which must be successfully completed in order for a Member to meet and maintain the standard of practice for Intravenous Infusion Therapy (IVIT). Those requirements include:

* successful completion of a College approved course in Intravenous Infusion Therapy;
* successful completion of a College approved or administered examination in Intravenous Infusion Therapy.

Additionally, a Member of the College must also meet the standard of practice for prescribing prior to being able to compound for and administer IVIT.

Similarly, Members may not administer any drug or substance listed in Table 2 of the General Regulation by non-IVIT injection (i.e. intramuscular and subcutaneous) until they meet the standard of practice for prescribing.

Members, who at the time of proclamation of the Naturopathy Act, 2007, held active IVT (intravenous therapy) certification from the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy - Naturopathy (BDDT-N) had six (6) months following the date of proclamation to meet the standard of practice for prescribing. As of January 1, 2016 this six month provision of the General Regulation expired, and IVT certified members under the BDDT-N who had not met the standard of practice for prescribing were required to cease performing IVIT with their patients. In order to resume performing IVIT they must successfully complete the Ontario Prescribing and Therapeutics course and examination, and a College approved course in IVIT and the College’s IVIT examination.
