Becoming Registered as an ND in Ontario

Anyone practicing naturopthy in Ontario must be registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (the College). As part of its public protection mandate, the College establishes the entry-to-practice requirements for safe, competent and ethical practice of naturopathic care in Ontario. By registering with the College, Ontario Naturopathic Doctors demonstrate to the public that they have met the entry-to-practice requirements and are entitled to use the protected titles “Naturopath”, “Naturopathic Doctor”, “Naturopathe” or “Docteur en naturopathie”, and may use the abbreviation “ND” for an English title or “DN” for a French title.  Naturopathic Doctors will also be entitled, if they are members of the College, to use the title "Dr." provided they also use ND following their name.

Using the protected title or holding oneself out to be a Naturopathic Doctor without being registered is a significant offence, which can result in prosecution, disciplinary action and/or fines. The College takes unauthorized practice very seriously.

Registration Regulation


The Registration Regulation defines the requirements for a person to be registered with the College. It describes the education, practical experience and currency requirements necessary for registration. In order to practice Naturopathy in Ontario, all applicants must have completed a four-year graduate level program in Naturopathy or a program that is substantially equivalent. The regulation specifies the three pathways of entry to the College:

  • Applicants who have graduated from a school accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME), and have written the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX) administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE);
  • Applicants who have graduated from a non-accredited program and have been assessed by the College to have training and knowledge which is substantially equivalent to a CNME accredited education.  This assessment is called the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Program; or
  • Applicants who are Naturopathic Doctors wishing to transfer to Ontario from another regulated Canadian jurisdiction where they are registered, in good standing and actively practising the profession.Having met one of the three requirements, applicants must then successfully complete the Ontario Clinical Examinations and/or jurisprudence examination in order to be eligible for registration.

CNME Accredited Schools


There are a total of seven (7) schools accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME) and recognized as providing a naturopathic education which meets the College’s entry-to-practise requirements.  Information on these schools, including locations, websites, and contact information, can be found on the CNME website.

Registration Process


All applicants for registration must complete a three (3) step registration process. For details on the registration process, including requirements, timelines, and costs, please click one of the links below:

Step 1: Pre-Registration - This step establishes the initial relationship with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.  It identifies which of the three pathways an individual is using to become registered with the College and allows potential applicants to provide the necessary documentation relating to their legal identity as well as information about language proficiency in either English or French.  Click here for more information.

Step 2: Application for Registration - This step allows applicants to demonstrate that they meet all of the entry-to-practise requirements as set out in the Registration Regulation and the policies of the College.  The application process is conducted entirely on-line.  Click here for more informationIMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants are advised to wait to complete Step 2 until they have successfully completed all entry-to-practise requirements and are eligible to apply. 

Step 3: Issuance of a Certificate of Registration - This final step is completed after the Application for Registration has been fully evaluated by the College and a decision has been made to issue a Certificate of Registration.  It is triggered by a letter to the applicant from the College indicating that you are indeed eligible to become registered and asking that final documentation, including proof of professional liability insurance, be submitted.  Click here for more information.
